10 TIPS TO WISELY CHOOSE LUGGAGE CARTS

If it’s true that 5 seconds is all it takes to form a first impression, then it’s important to wisely choose luggage carts. Whether the cart is standing outside of the main entrance, or being used to transport the guest’s suitcases, it’s one of the very first impressions the guest will form about the hotel.

The luggage cart is not only a piece of furniture, it’s also an important tool for the Bellman to efficiently perform tasks.

Given those premises, here 10 essential tips to consider when selecting luggage carts:

  1. Size: Carefully consider the optimum dimensions based on the size of the elevators and corridors that the carts will traverse.
  2. Wheels: Pneumatic wheels are useful if you have rough floors outside that the cart must navigate. If this is not the case (as is true for the majority of the hotels) standard caoutchouc wheels are more suitable. The caoutchouc wheel cart will be easier to maneuver and need less maintenance. If there are ramps or small slopes to navigate, you may want to have brakes added to the cart.
  3. Base of the cart: The base must be strong enough to handle heavy weight. If you are not an engineer, a good practice is to ask the manufacturer the maximum load capability. This can already give you a parameter on the sturdiness of the cart. Moreover, you can also ask the warranty and the general life span. A good quality cart can be used for over 10 years.
  4. Main Body: Aluminum tubing is preferable because it is lighter than steel. Moreover, the anodization of the aluminum protects the material from rust.  If the hotel is close to the beach or in a particularly humid climate, aluminum is a must to extend the life and beauty of the cart.
  5. Shape: The shape of the cart should be consistent with the style of the hotel. Some manufacturers can customize design or even make something unique. But remember, the cart has to remain ergonomic and easy to push. So, before choosing complicated shapes or unique designs, evaluate if it will still be operational and easy to push for the Bellman. Remember, this is an everyday tool that is in use all day!
  6. Color of the cart: As with shape, this is a choice you should make according to the style of the hotel. If you choose a colored finish, ask the manufacturer if it’s painted or anodized (in case of the aluminum). Anodization in gold, black or any other color does not fade away in time, while painted finishes do fade.  The most obvious ware and fading occur where the cart is frequently touched.
  7. Carpet: Request samples from the manufacturer so that you can check for the quality and colors of the carpet to be installed. You may also want to inquire about the possibility of using the same carpet on the cart as is employed throughout the hotel or a carpet that is waterproof and adapted to outdoor conditions.
  8. Personalization: Ask to personalize the cart with hotel logos on disks or on carpet. Those types of options are not expensive and gives a continuity and sophistication to the cart.
  9. Cart Cover with logo: Think about the possibility of using a cover. This is a useful way to protect the cart when left outside of the hotel. Also, it gives a feeling of elegance and luxury to a service piece of equipment.
  10. Motorized luggage cart: As a way to avoid work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), motorization is the ideal solution. The motor can not only assist the Bellman in carrying out tasks, but also prevent future WMSDs.
